So You Want to Buy a House?

As Realtors we sometimes shake our heads.

Believe it or not, there some people will actually post the address of where they are touring a house AND then post photos (including the valuable assets . . . potentially artwork and just upscale furnishings leading to unsavory characters to ‘case the house’ for a later robbery).

If your a Buyer, here are a few things to consider . . .

1) Yes, it is OK to take your coffee in the house; just be careful because if it spills you and your Realtor will be doing a ‘quick dance’ to get the spill cleaned up.

2) What about Food? That’s a no go. If you are going to an Open House, and they are serving food, eat it in

the kitchen (where they are likely serving it). Clean up after yourself.

3) Is it OK to dip your toes in the pool? You may want to check if it’s heated . . . or ask. It’s not OK to sit by the pool with your feet in and relax out there considering how much you like the house.

4) Can you check out the closets? Open the attic door? Kitchen cabinets. Yes to all. As a potential purchaser, you have a right to know how big the closets are – if there is crawl space or standing space in the attic or if the kitchen cabinets close properly. Having said that, you DO NOT have the right to examine the Seller’s personal property or take photos of it.

5) Is it OK to use the bathroom in a house you are previewing? Absolutely. The key is to ask the Realtor who is showing the house. This is particularly important in new construction or in foreclosed properties.

6) Should you plop down on the owner’s sofa? Probably not. Too casual. It’s not your furniture.

7) Is it SMART to share your comments about the property with while at the property because they are fresh in your mind. Once again, probably not. The owner may have just gone outside for a few feet away from the home to a neighbor’s but is still with in ‘earshot.’ Wait until you leave the property and you and your Realtor can discuss the merits of the home and pricing.
